Scientific and Clinical Case for Leveraging AI/Augmented Intelligence to Drive Whole-Person Integrated Care and Advance Health Equity

Session Summary

Clinical, industry health equity leaders will share lessons learned and suggest ways Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence can accelerate integration and improve health outcomes through:

  • Health Equity: Identify opportunities and risks for using AI and AUI to advance health equity – at the patient, system, and population levels, through clinical error mitigation, trauma-informed care, and care coordination
  • Medical Dental Integration: Integrated-delivery network (IDN)s perspective on accelerating whole-person integrated care through AI and AUI and sharing best practices to overcome obstacles to meaningful integration
  • Technology: Implications of policy and regulation on the future development and growth in a rapidly changing landscape

Genomic Medicine and Augmented Reality to Enhance Oral Surgery

Session Summary

Personalized medicine, driven by large datasets with known clinical outcomes, is replacing or enhancing non alrogithm-driven approaches to care across many fields in medicine. Bridging medicine and dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is uniquely positioned to introduce many of these advances to dentistry. The greatest promise for dentistry potentially lies in pathology and radiology. Advances in medicine, particularly in oncology, include not only early detection of oral cancers and precancer, but understanding future behavior of an innocuous-appearing white or red patch of the oral mucosa. Will a lesion become cancerous? Will it remain unchanged? Beyond prediction, augmented reality using a headset and holographic images is now being used in maxillofacial surgery for image-guided surgical navigation of traumatic dental injuries, developmental deformities, and tumors. Our workshop will explore these new approaches and include an interactive component as well. Audience members will learn ways to leverage technology, powered by established datasets, to understand best practices in oral surgery.

Conceptualization of Development of an Artificial Intelligence Platform (Digital Dental Hygienist) to Improve Compliance in Periodontal Maintenance Subjects

Session Summary

This workshop will describe how the Digital Dental Hygienist (DDH) AI has been developed and trained using an initial case series study. The study entitled, “Development of an Artificial Intelligence Platform / Digital Dental Hygienist to Improve Compliance in Periodontal Maintenance Patients” was conducted using a practice-based research network, The McGuire Institute (iMc). The overall objective of this case series was to train the AI and verify the improvement of periodontal health by more frequent and targeted AI-based compliance communications. The study data will demonstrate that subjects using DDH reported more time spent and motivation to perform home care/oral hygiene. Through increasing compliance with dentist/hygienist recommendations, there is also an associated decrease in the patient’s plaque and gingival index. At this workshop investigators will engage the audience with demos of DDH in-use and share a vision of the future of global periodontal disease management that can be realized through this technology.
